ReAmbitioning #001: Reimagining Ambition for Today's World
What does ambition mean in today's world?
We're in an interesting moment. Recently, on holiday, I witnessed something telling. During a casual conversation, someone described another person as "ambitious." The reaction surprised me— the word was taken as criticism rather than praise.
This moment captured something I've been observing everywhere: our relationship with ambition is evolving. Through my work coaching founders and leaders—and in my own life—I've noticed a shift. People aren't abandoning ambition, but they're reimagining it.
They're asking:
What is all this striving really for?
What does success look like now?
How can ambition serve a more balanced and purposeful life?
This shift is what ReAmbitioning is about.
Why ReAmbitioning?
After more than two decades in marketing and consulting, I co-owned and sold a business I’d helped grow. It was a milestone I’d worked toward for years, but reaching it made me pause and reflect: Is this what success looks like? What's next?
That moment sparked a journey of reimagining ambition in my own life. Since then, I’ve been coaching and advising founders and leaders—people navigating growth, change, and big questions about what they want from their work and lives.
What I'm seeing is fascinating. Through these conversations and my own observations, I’m witnessing how ambitious people are rewriting the rules of success:
A leader who traded London life for Portugal, finding more creativity and better team performance through remote work.
A successful founder who redefined success as the ability to take three months off each year for personal growth and family time.
A CEO who stepped back from rapid scaling to build a more sustainable company culture, ultimately achieving better results.
These aren't stories of ambition abandoned—they’re examples of ambition reimagined. Each person is still driven, still achieving, still creating impact—just on their own terms.
Fresh Perspectives on Success
Like many, I've wrestled with the tension between striving for more and staying connected to what matters most. Through my journey—and in my work with founders and leaders—I’ve come to believe that ambition remains a powerful force for achievement and positive change.
But here’s the thing: the way we approach ambition is evolving. It’s no longer about following a rigid path. Today, ambition is about building success on your own terms—whether that means scaling a business differently, creating more time for what matters, or finding fulfillment in new ways.
